Van Gaal oversaw a clear-out last summer, allowing experienced players such as Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra to leave as he signed high-profile names including Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao.
And speaking exclusively to the Telegraph, Van Gaal explained that both Rooney and Carrick are highly valuable to him in training sessions, with the pair offering advice on formations and style of play.
