LOUIS VAN GAAL was pleasantly surprised to see his Manchester United side put Monday's defeat to Arsenal behind them to overcome Tottenham at Old Trafford.

First-half strikes from Marouane Fellaini, Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney secured an emphatic 3-0 win over Spurs to move five points clear of fifth-placed Liverpool in the Premier League standings.
The performance was arguably United's best of the season so far, and Van Gaal was pleased with his players' response after the heartbreak of exiting the FA Cup almost a week ago.
"This was a massive game after losing to Arsenal," Van Gaal said.

"Besides the first five minutes we had control of the match, scored beautiful goals and didn't give much away.
"Arsenal was a big blow but I had a very good feeling when the players showed at training the same spirit as before.
"I've had 25 years as a manager and I've seen that players after a defeat are not always like that."
