Police resort to tear gas to separate Everton and Lille fans
EVERTON fans were caught up in more trouble in Lille today as police released tear gas to disperse large crowds in the city's main square.
Less than 24 hours after Toffees supporters were attacked in a pub in the French city, fans gathered in Grand Place.
They congregated around a theatre in the square.
But French police moved in to disperse the crowd with tear gas. Some wore riot gears, but some were also in plain clothes.
Reports suggested there were bottles thrown by fans but one witness denied it and claimed that fans were "enjoying themselves in a friendly atmosphere".
Other reports suggest that police fired rubber bullets with at least one fan being struck.
Everton have asked supporters to stay away from Lille's main square but crowds have started to gather again.
Around 8,000 supporters are expected in the French city ahead of tonight's Europa League clash.
