Cristiano Ronaldo is to blame for Champions League heartache claims Jose Mourinho
CHELSEA boss Jose Mourinho has revealed he still remains frustrated by Cristiano Ronaldo's penalty miss for Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final in 2012.
Real never progressed past the last four of Europe's elite competition during Mourinho's tenure at the Bernabeu.
Ronaldo missed a crucial spot kick in their semi-final against Bayern Munich.
Though Mourinho has won the Champions League with Porto and Inter Milan, missing out on a third title still eats him today.
"I've been in several semi-finals too and some defeats were especially hard to take, such as the goal that did not exist against Liverpool (during his first Chelsea spell) in 2005 or on penalties in 2012 when our first-choice penalty taker (Ronaldo) went up first and failed," Mourinho told TV124.
It is a frustration that remains
"Losing a semi-final on penalties when your best player, your best penalty taker, the player in whom you trust to shoot the first penalty, goes to the box and misses it, is a frustration that remains."
Chelsea have been linked with a move for Ronaldo, however Mourinho has ruled out such rumours and said: "Forget it".
The Blues kick off their Champions League campaign at home to Schalke tomorrow (7:45pm).
