The thrice-capped England international has joined the Black Cats on a five-year deal, for undisclosed fee thought to be in the region of £10million.
Rodwell constitutes Gus Poyet's fifth summer signing after Patrick van Aanholt, Jordi Gomez, Billy Jones and Costel Pantilimon.
And will console Sunderland fans who are disappointed with the seemingly stagnant deal for last season's derby hero Fabio Borini.
Rodwell's inability to cement a first-team place amongst Manuel Pellegrini's star studded side is an all too familiar story for young English talent.
Scott Parker, Steve Sidwell and Wilfried Zaha are just a few who've fallen victim to the allure of riches at a so-called 'bigger' side.
Just two-years, two-goal and 26 appearances after his £12m move from Everton - the 23-year-old will try and re-establish himself as a prominent youngster capable of an international call-up.
