Mata, who at £37.1million is United's club-record signing, helped himself to six goals in 15 games under former boss David Moyes last season, and De Gea has urged his new manager to hang on to the Spanish maestro.
He told Movistar: "I would not sell Juan Mata. He is a very important player for us."
"We have taken a qualitative leap with him and he has adapted very well."
