Man Utd to turn to Bastian Schweinsteiger with Van Gaal open to Juan Mata offers
BASTIAN SCHWEINSTEIGER has emerged as a fresh Manchester United target with Louis Van Gaal open to letting Juan Mata leave Old Trafford.
Reports emerged over the weekend Barcelona are lining up a £40million bid for the Spanish playmaker who could be the first victim of Van Gaal's regime.
Express Sport learned last week that United had the chance to sign Schweinsteiger earlier this year as Pep Guardiola preferred £20 million rated Toni Kroos.
Though Kroos is unlikely to move to Old Trafford this summer, Schweinsteiger is on Van Gaal's wishlist.
Moreover, United are in need of a more creative spark in midfield with Marouane Fellaini struggling to adapt to recreate the form he showed when he was at Everton.
Barcelona are looking to wrest the title from Atletico Madrid next season, and Mata who cost United £38m is thought to be the ideal fit.
It also transpired that Barcelona tried to land Mata three years ago before he moved from Valencia to Chelsea.
