PICTURES: Saints star Jay Rodriguez's injury KO fear for England
SOUTHAMPTON star Jay Rodriguez is in grave danger of missing the World Cup after suffering a serious knee injury against Manchester City at the Etihad this afternoon.
The striker jumped to control the ball and under no pressure at all, he landed very awkwardly before collapsing to the deck and screaming in the agony.
There was a lengthy stoppage as players appeared to be concerned before Rodriguez was stretchered off.
The TV cameras panned to Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino who looked worried as well as England boss Roy Hodgson who was watching on from the stands.
Very much hope that the Jay Rodriguez injury is not as serious as it appears to be
Rodriguez is expected to undergo a scan although his hopes of making the World Cup could be hit if it proves to be a cruciate ligament injury.
He was subsequently replace by James Ward-Proswe and was given a warm applause as he made his way off the pitch.
Match of the Day pundit Gary Lineker is keeping his fingers crossed and tweeted: "Very much hope that the Jay Rodriguez injury is not as serious as it appears to be."
