Cambridge United 4 - Gosport Borough 0: U's use cup success to boost promotion ambitions
DO not expect Cambridge United's FA Carlsberg Trophy celebrations to drag on as they immediately turn their attentions to ending their nine-year Football League exile.
It is simply a case of one down and one to go for Cambridge following yesterday's 4-0 demolition of Gosport Borough.
But Cambridge have bigger fish to fry and will hope this Wembley visit will be followed by another in the Conference Premier play-offs in two months' time.
"Every experience can only be good and we can feed off it and grow from here," said manager Richard Money.
"We know there is a lot of work to do. We are not assured off the play-offs but we are in a good position and if we can get there and come back here this experience will only be good."
Part-timers Gosport did not deserve such an emphatic defeat, the joint-biggest margin in this final's history since 1975. But there was only ever going to be one winner once striker Ryan Bird opened the scoring with a deft 38th minute chip.
Ryan Donaldson's two quickfire second-half goals ended the contest soon after.
Ben Pearce's tired lunge on Andy Pugh ensuring Luke Berry wrapped up the win from the penalty spot in the 79th minute.
Gosport will bank upwards of £25,000 from their cup run and manager Alex Pike said: "This run has given a club like ours an unexpected revenue stream. It has secured the future of the club for the next three years and it's something to build on."
