Sunderland strike late to dump Chelsea out of the Capital One Cup
SUNG-YEUNG KI sent Sunderland into the Capital One Cup semi-finals last night by scoring his first goal for the club as they beat Chelsea 2-1 at the Stadium of Light.
Ki bagged the winner with two minutes of extra-time remaining, after Fabio Borini had forced the tie into extra-time in the 88th minute.
Lee Cattermole had given Chelsea the lead by scoring Sunderland’s sixth own-goal of the season when he slid in to try to clear a close-range shot from Frank Lampard, with the ball crossing about two feet over the line before being clawed out by goalkeeper Vito Mannone.
In last night’s other quarter-final, Manchester City beat Leicester 3-1 at the King Power Stadium, but they lost defender Pablo Zabaleta in the 12th minute with what appeared to be a hamstring injury – and it has emerged that Sergio Aguero could now be out injured for two months, rather than the six weeks initially thought.
