Newcastle 1 - Southampton 1: Jay Rodriguez ensures it's honours even at St James' Park
JAY RODRIGUEZ grabbed a second-half equaliser as Southampton picked up a point away at Newcastle.
The Saints had bounced back against Manchester City after back-to-back defeats away at Arsenal and Chelsea respectively.
For Newcastle, it had represented a serious test of their European aspirations.
The Magpies took the lead in scrappy fashion in the 27th minute. Jos Hooiveld dangled out a leg but made an air-kick. The ball bobbled into Yoan Gourcuff's path, who rounded Paulo Gazzaniga before tapping in for his sixth goal of the season.
Southampton made a double substitution at half-time with Adam Lallana and Morgan Schneiderlin come on for James Ward-Prowse and Dani Osvaldo.
The Saints seemed revitalised and were on level terms after 65 minutes. A crisp move resulted in Rodriguez accepting a one-two from Steven Davis before coolly finishing past Tim Krul.
Loic Remy missed a glorious opportunity with 20 minutes remaining, but Saints held on to claim another precious point.
