David Moyes set to drop Manchester United star Wayne Rooney
DAVID MOYES is set to drop Wayne Rooney – for the Manchester United striker’s own good.
It’s nothing to do with Rooney’s form but to ensure he doesn’t burn out before the end of the season and next summer’s World Cup.
“I’ll need to try to look after Wayne as we go along and I’ve said this to him,” said Moyes. “We’ll need to give him a breather.”
Moyes was disappointed Rooney played virtually both the recent England internationals.
And while the player is eager to play every game for both club and country he is also well aware that he hasn’t enjoyed the best of fortunes ahead of past World Cup and European championships and is determined to ensure that the jinx doesn’t strike again.
“I was unlucky breaking my foot before the World Cup in Germany and then being banned before the last tournament,” he said.
“So I hope I can get a clear run of games and prepare well for Brazil.” Moyes though is concentrating on today’s league clash at Cardiff.
“With the intensity of his football and how well Wayne is playing, I was hoping we could have got Wayne some time off,” said Moyes.
“But obviously Roy Hodgson has to pick his teams and the games were important for him. I respect that.
“But I’ll probably need to give Wayne a rest. We Can’t run him into the ground all the time.”
