REVEALED: Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney could have played for SCOTLAND
MANCHESTER UNITED striker Wayne Rooney nearly ended up representing Scotland instead of England, it has been revealed.
The 27-year-old was invited to play for Scotland when he was 16.
And former Scotland manager Berti Vogts has lifted the lid on how he tried to sway Rooney.
"I spoke to Wayne Rooney - his grandmother, she is Scottish," he told BBC Sport.
"I spoke to him - a young lad of 16 years of age. I said to him 'you can play for Scotland.
"You have to speak to the player but he told me 'I'm so sorry boss, I'm English.
"The Scottish Football Association found the grandmother and I made the call.
"I flew from Glasgow to Everton. He was playing under David Moyes at Everton and I spoke to him."
Rooney has scored 36 goals in 84 appearances for his country.
