Leighton Baines wanted to join Man Utd admits Everton coach Alan Stubbs
EVERTON coach Alan Stubbs has revealed that left-back Leighton Baines wanted to quit Goodison Park in order to join Manchester United.
Baines stayed on Merseyside despite intense interest in his services from the champions, who signed his team-mate Marouane Fellaini on deadline day for £27.5million.
David Moyes made formal offers to his old club for the England international during the summer, but Everton refused to sell.
Stubbs admitted Baines wanted to move to Old Trafford, but a deal was blocked by the Toffees.
"Bainesy was never really an option to leave, the club had dug its heels in, but Bainesy had obviously said he'd like to go," said Stubbs.
Roberto Martinez had previously denied that Baines wanted to leave, but coach Stubbs has set the record straight.
The 28-year-old has yet to have his say on the situation, while reports indicate that United will return to the negotiating table in January.
