EXCLUSIVE: Wayne Rooney snub will see Chelsea fail with title bid says Robbie Savage
CHELSEA'S title bid is doomed to fail this season because they missed out on Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney during the summer transfer window, according to Robbie Savage.
Rooney spoke out this week to reveal he is focused on "getting his head" down at Old Trafford after a move to Chelsea failed to materialise last month.
And former Manchester United, Derby and Leicester midfielder Savage believes David Moyes holding onto the England star has ruined Jose Mourinho's chances of lifting the Premier League trophy at the end of the season.
"Rooney was fantastic against Chelsea and even when he came on at Swansea," said Savage.
"And his performance against [Bayer] Leverkusen proved his dedication to United on the pitch.
"If United had sold Rooney to Chelsea then they would have been the clear favourites to win the league.
"But Jose Mourinho doesn't have the best strikers available as a result.
Savage - who started his professional career at Old Trafford despite never playing a senior game - claims rivals Manchester City are his tip for the title.
And the 38-year-old has doubted United's ability to win the Champions League this season despite Moyes adding £27.5million Marouane Fellaini to his squad on deadline day.
"City are my favourites for this season," Savage said.
"Fellaini has improved the United team, and he looked impressive against Leverkusen.
"Moyes has obviously brought him in because he knows him well from Everton.
"He will know him better than anyone, but is that team really going to win the Champions League?"
