Rising son Nathan Redmond has feet on his ground after Norwich winner
NATHAN REDMOND believes mum’s the word when it comes to being a teenage match-winner in the Premier League.
The winger, 19, has made a stellar start to his top-flight career following his summer switch from Birmingham to Norwich.
His superb solo goal in the 68th minute earned the Canaries their first Premier League victory and ended Southampton’s unbeaten start to the campaign.
A youngster who boasts not only searing pace, but the ability to use both feet and score goals, is not going to go unnoticed for long.
And, of course, Roy Hodgson’s senior England squad has two players of a similar age in Ross Barkley and Raheem Sterling.
But Redmond is relaxed about his own prospects of joining them as he prepares instead for the Under-21 match with Moldova, at Reading on Thursday.
“If players are playing well it won’t go unnoticed,” he said.
“My mum has told me from day one that if I play well on the pitch, then everything else will take care of itself.”
Norwich paid just £2million to land Redmond with another £1.2m due in add-ons, making him a candidate for bargain of the season already.
Redmond has another calming influence in the shape of his manager, the ever-cautious Chris Hughton.
He said of the teenager: “As good as he was today, there will be days when he won’t be as good – that’s normal – but he is a very willing learner and that gives him a chance.”
