Manchester United have opening £25m Ander Herrera bid turned down
MANCHESTER UNITED are thought to have had a £25m bid for Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera rejected.
The Red Devils, according to reports in Spain to have made an offer last night as they step up their hunt to land a midfielder.
The 24-year-old impressed against the champions in the Europa League 18 months ago, but United are looking for a midfielder that could fill the void left behind by Paul Scholes who retired at the end of last season.
However, Bilbao are unwilling to sanction a deal for Herrera who has a reported £30m release clause in his contract.
Speaking at a press conference, club president Josu Urrutia, said: "We have had an offer for Ander Herrera.
"Our club is different, it is based on sentiment. Our objective isn't to make money.
"We received the offer last night and have communicated that we will not negotiate for our players.
"For a player to go, first the player must express his desire to leave the club and pay the release clause."
Herrera's contract with Bilbao expires in 2016.
