Capital One Cup Round-up: Ravel Morrison waiting in the wings for West Ham
RAVEL MORRISON scored his first competitive goal for West Ham as the Premier League side laboured to a 2-1 win against League Two Cheltenham.
The former Manchester United youth team midfielder stood out in a largely reserve side, giving a reminder of his potential with an impressive performance.
Shortly after being booked for diving in the area, Morrison was fouled 25 yards out allowing Ricardo Vaz Te to curl in a fine opener.
And then just a minute after half-time, Morrison created space for himself on the edge of the area before firing into the bottom corner.
Cheltenham gave West Ham a scare when Jermaine McGlashan was fouled inside the box allowing Matt Richards to score from the spot.
Southampton continued their excellent start to the season by seeing off Barnsley 5-1 at Oakwell after clinical strikes from Steven Davis, Jay Rodriguez, Emmanuel Mayuka and Gaston Ramirez.
Stephen Dawson pulled one back for the Tykes with a blistering right-foot drive but Davis added a late penalty for the Saints.
Norwich’s Swedish summer signings Johan Elmander and Martin Olsson both scored as Norwich thrashed Bury 6-3.
Anthony Pilkington, Leroy Fer and Steven Whittaker also struck for the Canaries while the Shakers hit back through Anton Forrester, William Edjenguele and Jessy Reindorf.
On a night when several League One sides caused problems for higher-league opponents, Lee Tomlin scored a hat-trick as Peterborough beat Reading 6-0.
Goals from former Newcastle striker Nile Ranger and Alex Pritchard gave Swindon a 2-0 win over Harry Redknapp’s QPR.
