Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho in a plea to land Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney
JOSE MOURINHO last night stepped up his pursuit of Wayne Rooney with a “let him go” plea to Manchester United.
After confirming that Chelsea will lodge a third bid, believed to be £40million for him, Mourinho said: “We make the bid and they say no again, what do we lose? One email?
“I don’t understand why United want to hang onto an unhappy player rather than sell him to a rival.
“It happens in Italy every season without any problem. A player goes from Milan to Inter, from Inter to Milan, from Roma to Juventus, from Juventus to Inter.” Mourinho insisted he wouldn’t hesitate to sell one of his best players to a rival if that player didn’t want to stay with him.
“There is not a rule to the player that is unhappy,” he said. “Before we had William Gallas unhappy and sold him to Arsenal.
“I was so sad about Gallas, he was fundamental for us but he wanted to go and we couldn’t stop him. So we decided not to stop him.
“It wasn’t an economical problem, it was just the player wanted to go. So we thought it was fair to sell him in the end.”
In the meantime, Mourinho revealed that he does have other options if he fails to capture Rooney and hopes to complete one more big signing.
“The striker position is a position we will try to improve,” he said.
