Wenger prepares £25m move for Michu as Giroud calls for new strike partner
ARSENE WENGER is preparing to splash out £25million on Swansea striker Michu - as Olivier Giroud adds his name to those calling for new signing at the Emirates.
Wenger's transfer policy is under-fire after an opening day defeat to Aston Villa, having failed to spend a penny during the transfer market so far this summer.
Just Yaya Sanogo has been signed on a free transfer from Auxerre, and Arsenal's top target Luis Suarez appears set to stay at Liverpool.
But the Frenchman could be set to test Swansea's resolve with a £25m approach for Michu, that could see the Welsh club to let go of their star striker.
Swans manager Michael Laudrup has dismissed suggestions that Michu could be sold this late in the window, but chairman Huw Jenkins is thought to have an agreement with the Spaniard allowing him to leave for such a transfer figure.
And Arsenal hitman Giroud - who opened the scoring against Villa - has echoed supporters at the North-London club by calling for new faces, pin-pointing the need for another striker.
"In my opinion, it’s necessary for the club to recruit another striker," Giroud told French newspaper Le Parisien.
"Obviously, I think about it a little bit. It may change the play one day, especially if it’s a high-profile signing.
"It’s useless lamenting this though. I know what I have to do and what I’m capable of. I’m focusing on me and my work. The coach is counting on me, so I don’t think too much."
Meanwhile, Wenger insists the club are working around the clock to sign new players, but insisted the team must take responsibility for winning games on the pitch.
"We are in the market, everybody knows we are ready to buy players, but until we buy players we have to win football games and it's not an excuse not to win the game," he said.
"We are there to spend money. People say: 'Buy players, buy players, buy players'. But who? We analyse every single player in the world and work 24 hours a day for that. We are serious about it. Until we buy players we have to win football games."
