Sheffield Wednesday want Southampton striker Billy Sharp
SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY have joined the hunt to sign Billy Sharp from Southampton.
Striker Sharp, 27, above, has been out of favour at St Mary’s since the arrival of manager Mauricio Pochettino.
Wednesday want Sharp – a lifelong Sheffield United fan – on a six-month loan deal, with a view to a permanent switch, but they face competition from several other clubs.
The Owls are badly lacking in the striking department after giving Gary Madine the rest of the month off to prepare for a court case. The 22-year-old is accused of affray and causing grievous bodily harm on a night out in Sheffield last year and is due in Leeds Crown Court on September 2.
Owls boss Dave Jones said: “The club has taken a decision to allow Gary to concentrate fully on his court case.
“It’s another player that we lose, but it’s Gary’s future and it’s more important than football. He needs to be fully focused on that.
“I have been there myself, I know what it takes.”
