Mourinho will wait for Rooney but rules out selling David Luiz to Barca
JOSE MOURINHO has revealed that Chelsea are prepared to wait until the end of the transfer window in order to sign Manchester United star Wayne Rooney - but insisted Barcelona target David Luiz was not set to leave.
Chelsea have seen two bids for Rooney turned down by United, while Barcelona have had a £35million offer for Blues defender Luiz rejected.
And Mourinho is not worried about the prospect of losing the Brazilian this summer, but claims that he is prepared to wait to bring Rooney to Stamford Bridge.
"There is no time limit," said Mourinho about Chelsea's pursuit for Rooney.
"We have our squad of strikers. We have identified the player as one we would like to have with us. We have done it in an ethical way and we are going to do that until the last day."
Mourinho was dealt a dose of reality this week when former club Real Madrid beat his side 2-1 in a friendly in Miami, with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring twice and providing an assist.
But the Portuguese tactician remains focused on signing Rooney and claims the Blues have not stepped out of line as they bid to land the England star.
"We are far away so we are not in England to know every detail but we are doing things in the correct way," said Mourinho.
"We made the bid and Manchester United have reacted. Let's see what happens. But we can't do more than we are doing now.
"We are doing things legally, making the official bid directly to the club, no interviews or comments or direct relations with the player, no contact, absolutely nothing.
"We are doing everything in an ethical way, so let's see if things change.
Mourinho also said he had no interest in selling Brazilian defender David Luiz to Barcelona, with Chelsea rejecting an initial £35m approach for the Confederations Cup winner.
However, the 50-year-old suggests that Barca turn their attentions elsewhere - perhaps firing a dig at Liverpool with Daniel Agger also linked with a move to the Nou Camp.
"The bid? It's lost time for them," Mourinho added.
"My advice to them is to go to the second player on their list because they are wasting their time. We don't want to lose our best players. No chance."
Liverpool rejected a £15m offer from Barca for Agger earlier this week, although Express Sport understands that the Reds are bracing themselves for an improved £25m bid.
