Newcastle looking to see off Everton for Wigan's James McCarthy
NEWCASTLE are keen to beat Everton to the signature of Wigan midfielder James McCarthy.
Newcastle manager Alan Pardew, who is close to sealing a deal for Lyons striker Bafetimbi Gomis, wants to bring in McCarthy as he fears he may lose Frenchman Yohan Cabaye to French giants Paris Saint-Germain.
Wigan are expected to demand close to £20m for McCarthy, 22, but both Newcastle and Everton feel they can bring in the Republic of Ireland international for a much lower fee.
McCarthy was hugely impressive for Wigan last season despite their relegation to the Championship and is said to be open to a move to Newcastle.
Everton boss Roberto Martinez has also been linked with a move for McCarthy and has already brought in former Wigan men Arouna Kone, Joel Robles and Antolin Alcaraz from his former club.
Plus joining Everton would mean McCarthy could remain in the north-west of England.
Newcastle are expected to complete the signing of long-term target Gomis this week after having a €10m offer accepted by Lyon for the striker.
Jean-Michel Aulas, the Lyons president, said: "We have accepted the proposal of Newcastle, which is €8m, plus €2m bonus.
"The agreement is now linked to the acceptance of agent's fees. "
