Everton and Stoke target Roberto Martinez puts Wigan decision on hold
ROBERTO MARTINEZ has delayed a decision on his Wigan future until the start of next week after asking chairman Dave Whelan to clarify how he intends to move the club forward.
Martinez yesterday met Whelan for the second time in 48 hours. But rather than giving an answer on whether he would stay or go, another summit is planned for the start of next week.
Whelan has seized upon that as a positive step, having previously seen Martinez twice turn down Aston Villa in recent summers. But such a situation gives Everton and Stoke time to consider formal approaches.
Both managerless clubs have been linked with the Spaniard, who helped Wigan to FA Cup success but then saw them relegated into the Championship. However, neither has made any contact yet.
Martinez has asked about plans for a new training ground and academy that would be built next to Whelan’s Wrightington Hotel and Country Club.
“We have had a good, constructive talk about the club and how we can move forward in training facilities and youth development,” said Whelan.
“If he wanted to move he would have said, ‘I’m going’.”
