Borussia Dortmund star Mario Gotze left so gutted to miss Wembley showdown
MARIO GOTZE has lost his battle to be fit for Saturday’s Champions League final.
Borussia Dortmund’s attacking midfielder has now played his last game for the club – he will move to final opponents Bayern Munich for £31.5million this summer.
Gotze sustained a hamstring injury in the semi-final second leg against Real Madrid and suffered a setback in his recovery when he had to cut short his first training session on Tuesday.
“The final was my big goal and in the past weeks I’ve battled hard for it. I’m unbelievably sorry I will not be able to help the team in this important match,” he said. “I have huge belief in our team and will travel to London to support the lads off the pitch.”
Gotze’s absence is a huge blow to Jurgen Klopp’s plan to upset the Bundesliga champions as, along with Marco Reus and Robert Lewandowski, he is key to Dortmund’s attacking style.
Kevin Grosskreutz replaced Gotze at the Bernabeu and seems most likely to stand in at Wembley.
