Kevin Keegan: £35m Liverpool flop Andy Carroll has no future at Anfield
LIVERPOOL legend Kevin Keegan has said he does not think on-loan striker Andy Carroll has a long-term future at the club.
Keegan starred for the Reds between 1971 and 1977, but now works as a television pundit for ESPN.
And the 62-year-old was quizzed about his former club after the international broadcaster's coverage of the FA Cup final on Saturday, when he suggested Carroll was not liked by Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers.
"I think it's pretty obvious that Brendan doesn't want to [bring Carroll back] because when he moved in, the first thing you would normally do is look at all the players and if he wants to loan him out, loan him out at Christmas," said Keegan.
"But he loaned him out straight away, so, maybe he had a conversation and said, 'yeah, let him go'. So that maybe tells its own story, if that did happen, but I'm guessing there."
While Carroll could be set to stay at loan club West Ham after co-owner indicated the Hammers would be opening discussions with Liverpool to keep the 24-year-old.
But Keegan believes the Merseyside outfit need more variety in their attacking options, which the former Newcastle star would provide.
"I'm not sure about [Liverpool's] forwards, they've got a lot of them, but they're all the same. They're all small, quick guys.
"What's going to happen with Andy Carroll? He's still there. I still think they need, what I call, a centre-forward.
"I know they've bought [Daniel] Sturridge and I know they've got [Luis] Suarez, something I call a centre-forward, which none of those are - not Sturridge, not [Fabio] Borini, not [Philippe] Coutinho, these are all what I call second strikers at best and midfield players."
