Fergie calls it quits with David Moyes tipped for Manchester United job
SIR ALEX FERGUSON'S future was the subject of intense speculation last night as rumours circled Manchester that he is set to announce his retirement.
Manchester United players were apparently told at a golf day the club are preparing a major announcement at the final home match of the season, against Swansea on Sunday, when they will receive the Premier League trophy.
The speculation that Ferguson is about to end his 26-year spell as manager was fuelled when United’s media department last night did not respond to calls checking out the story.
News that 71-year-old Ferguson is to undergo a hip operation this summer emerged at the weekend but he told friends it would not stop him continuing as manager next season. In his programme notes before United played Chelsea on Sunday, he wrote: “I don’t have any plans at the moment to walk away from what I believe is going to be something special.”
Moyes’s contract runs out in the summer and no agreement has been reached over renewal.
But the 50-year-old has said he wants to wait until after the season before deciding if he will extend.
