David Moyes short of net profits at Everton
IF David Moyes had a striker worth his weight in goals Everton would probably have bagged a share of the Champions League riches.
The Toffees mathematically still have a chance of finishing in the Premier League’s top four, but are relying on a collapse by those above them and winning all their own games. Their struggles were epitomised in this narrow victory.
The fact they could manage only a single goal, from Steven Pienaar, emphasises the lack of cutting edge.
Everton have found the net less than all the teams above them and Moyes believes a place among Europe’s elite might have been more realistic if they had a free-scoring striker in their ranks.
“I think someone who could have got us 15 or 20 goals would maybe have made our position greater than it is at the moment,” he said. “We just seem to sort of go astray around the edge of the box.”
Nikica Jelavic, who has just one goal in his last 19 league games, was poor against Fulham and Moyes must be wondering whether to jettison him in the summer.
The Cottagers are safe in mid-table and manager Martin Jol is confident of strengthening his squad to ensure progression next season.
“I will always find a solution,” he said.
