Lothar Matthaus slams Mario Gotze for Bayern Munich move
GERMAN legend Lothar Matthaus says Borussia Dortmund have every right to “feel betrayed” after it was confirmed their attacking midfielder Mario Gotze will join Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich next season.
The fans feel betrayed. Comments Mario Gotze made in the recent past [about wanting to stay at Dortmund] don’t make him credible
With Dortmund meeting Real Madrid tonight in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final, coach Jurgen Klopp admitted his annoyance at the timing of the announcement.
Gotze quickly came in for fierce criticism from irate Dortmund fans, who posted messages on his Facebook page, and Matthaus, who won seven Bundesliga titles with Bayern, said: “The fans feel betrayed. Comments Mario Gotze made in the recent past [about wanting to stay at Dortmund] don’t make him credible. This damages the whole of football.”
On the timing of the announcement, Matthaus added: “It’s not fair, it’s unbelievable.”
Klopp said: “I can say time heals everything - it’s going to take a while. This news is not good for us. The timing is not ideal."
