Leeds 2 - Sheffield Wednesday 1: Luke's in for new boss
BRIAN McDERMOTT proved that he has the Midas touch after two Luke Varney goals all but guaranteed Leeds’ safety.
I’m really pleased, and I thought the players were very brave and the crowd really got behind us. It’s a big win for us.
The Whites looked set to lose in the first game under their new boss after a pitiful fi rst half in which Jermaine Johnson put Wednesday ahead.
But they claimed a first win in eight games as Varney headed home twice in six second half minutes.
McDermott, sacked by Reading last month, said: “I’m really pleased, and I thought the players were very brave and the crowd really got behind us. It’s a big win for us.”
Owls boss Dave Jones – who was banned from the touchline – said: “We should have won but we switched off and allowed them two free headers in our box. Apart from that they never hassled us.’’
