Arsene Wenger Euro fears: We cannot deny our failure
ARSENE Wenger believes the Premier League is “in denial” if it believes it is the best in the world, as it was revealed England are in danger of losing a Champions League place.
UEFA have confirmed that La Liga will officially become their No1-ranked league this summer for the first time in five years and the Bundesliga is also set to overtake the Premier League next season.
There is uncertainty about whether England will continue to get four places in the Champions League with UEFA next due to review the competition’s make-up in 2015, with heavily funded leagues such as France and Russia pushing for more.
UEFA’s complicated co-efficient system evaluates how many spots each nation should have and, since Manchester United beat Chelsea in the 2008 Champions League final, England has topped the list.
The top three countries get to enter four teams into the Champions League and, although fourth-placed Italy are some way behind England, a change could see the third-placed league lose one of its representatives.
As the Champions League and Europa League semi-final draws were made in Nyon yesterday, Wenger said: “Has English football fallen away from Europe? Looking at last season and this season, yes.
“We have to not be in denial and say we are the best in the world.”
