Edwin van der Sar lends support to misfiring countryman Robin van Persie
EDWIN VAN DER SAR has backed Manchester United striker Robin van Persie to end his 10-game barren spell in front of goal - insisting: "He is still one of the best players in the Premier League."
Robin van Persie is still one of the best players in the Premier League.
The Dutch international scored his last goal for United against Everton at Old Trafford on February 10.
But van Persie's countryman van der Sar, who spent six years at Old Trafford, is sure he will soon regain his goalscoring touch.
"Robin is playing well - all he is not doing is scoring goals," van der Sar said.
"As a striker all you want to do is score - but he has done his bit during the first and middle portions of the season."
United have crashed out the Champions League and the FA Cup since van Persie last netted but van der Sar doesn't envisage them slipping up in the Premier League.
Sir Alex Ferguson's men, who fell to defeat to Manchester City on Monday, travel to Stoke City on Sunday.
"If Manchester United had won on Monday that would have been it," said Van der Sar.
"That result would have hurt, as it always does when United lose a game - but the only way to get over it is to focus on the next one.
"The title is almost over and that is the prize they really want.
"Over the years United have had some good results at Stoke and they are more than capable of doing it again."
