Furthermore, United are looking to accrue fresh talent with the old-time campaigners Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs approaching the end of their illustrious careers.
And it is believed that McCarthy has aroused interest along with Liverpool.
Football website Goal states that scouts have been dispatched to watch McCarthy and have been tracking Angelo Henriquez, who was loaned out to the Premier League strugglers January.
