Premier League handed Hawk-Eye goal-line technology contract
THE Premier League has been awarded the Hawk-Eye goal-line technology contract, it has been confirmed.
The innovative technologial aid will be implemented next season and could also be used for the traditional curtain-raiser, the Community Shield.
Goal-line technology has come under scathing attack from UEFA president Michel Platini, who has questioned the cost of it as well as whether it would hinder referees.
The camera-based ball-tracking system has been a resounding success in tennis and cricket, where challenging reviews have become part and parcel of those sports.
The Premier League had championed goal-line technology for a number of years, but their calls for it had fallen upon deaf ears.
Former Arsenal and FA Chairman David Dein came out in favour of it, when addressing the Soccerex conference in Manchester.
He said: "The Premier League will be the first league in Europe to introduce it.
"I have been on this campaign for six or seven years and now it's going to happen.
"The referees need help, the camera will always beat the eye, and every referee in the Premier League is in favour of it."
