Edgar Davids: Callum McManaman tackle sends a bad message about English football
THE FA’s decision not to punish Wigan defender Callum McManaman for his horror tackle on Newcastle star Massadio Haidara came under further attack last night.
Dutch hard man and Champions League winner Edgar Davids believes the decision will be a terrible advertisement for English football that will now be seen all around the world.
Furious Newcastle branded the FA’s disciplinary system “not fit for purpose” after McManaman escaped punishment, even though a linesman saw the incident.
Davids, 40, now in charge at League Two Barnet and nicknamed “the Pitbull” for the ferocity of his play, said: “People will think: ‘the FA let it slide’. It’s not a good signal. It goes across all the world and people will think that is English football.
“They could make a statement and show this is not acceptable. Now people will think that they can get away with it.”
