Liverpool legend Ian Rush pleads for club to sign Swansea's Ashley Williams
LIVERPOOL legend Ian Rush has urged the club to snap up Ashley Williams in the transfer window.
Williams has emerged in recent weeks as a top transfer target for Liverpool, who are lining up a replacement for defensive stalwart Jamie Carragher as he intends to retire at the end of the season.
The Swansea captain has also been a mooted target for Arsenal, as Arsene Wenger has been concerned with the performances of Thomas Vermaelen and Per Mertesacker.
Williams would command a transfer fee of £8m, but more importantly for Liverpool he would be reunited with Brendan Rodgers, who managed him when he was Swansea boss.
Rush, who scored 346 goals for Liverpool, firmly believes Williams can fill Carragher's boots.
He told the Liverpool Echo: "To get in Ashley Williams would be great.
“I’ve seen him play for Wales on a number of occasions and he is organised and a good captain.
“He knows what he is doing and the link to Liverpool is natural because Brendan Rodgers managed him at Swansea.
“At the right price Swansea would let him go although that they are in Europe next season may have a bearing on his decision."
Williams guided Swansea to Capital One Cup glory last month.
