Roberto Martinez: The priority is survival
WIGAN manager Roberto Martinez will not risk Premier League safety for a nice day out at Wembley, but that does not stop him relishing their FA Cup quarter-final against Everton tomorrow.
We do want to win trophies and play at Wembley, but never at a cost. It is paramount that we stay up.
It will be a chance for him finally to play for something to win, rather than a constant battle to beat the drop from the Premier League.
Wigan travel to Goodison Park for only their second FA Cup quarter-final and Martinez said: “We will be playing for the opportunity to win a trophy, whereas we are always in the big games playing with fear of something to lose – and that is very different.”
However, the Spaniard is still keeping an eye on their next league outing against Newcastle.
He said: “The priority will always be to stay in the Premier League. We do want to win trophies and play at Wembley, but never at a cost. It is paramount that we stay up.”
