Why life after Old Trafford may not be so bad for Wayne Rooney
WAYNE ROONEY could be set to leave Manchester United in a £30million deal in the summer - but it's not always doom and gloom after leaving Old Trafford,
Sir Alex Ferguson has parted company with many a talent in his 26 years at the helm.
Here we look at some of them.
Cristiano Ronaldo
An astronomical offer from Real Madrid prompted Cristiano Ronaldo to leave Old Trafford in 2009.
The Portugese genius has gone on to establish himself as one of the game's greats but has always spoken fondly of Ferguson, the man he sees as a father figure.
Ronaldo scored the goal that knocked United out the Champions League but refused to celebrate.
David Beckham
David Beckham's relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson deteriorated so much that he left United to join Real Madrid in 2003
Beckham was Madrid's newest galactico but won just one La Liga title in his four-year spell at the Bernabeu.
He went on to play 115 times for his country and has enjoyed spells at LA Galaxy, AC Milan and Paris St-Germain.
Diego Forlan
Considered by many a flop at Old Trafford, Uruguay striker Diego Forlan enjoyed plenty of success after leaving Manchester.
Forlan arrived from Independiente for £6.9million in January 2002 and took 27 games to score his first goal.
But he left in 2004 and went on to make a name for himself at Villarreal and Athletico Madrid, where he scored at better than a goal every other game.
Jaap Stam
Dutchman Jaap Stam spent three years at Old Trafford before being controversially sold to Lazio in 2001.
He agreed the deal to leave Old Trafford after meeting Sir Alex Ferguson in a petrol station and proceeded to play for Lazio, AC Milan and Ajax.
Ferguson has since admitted that letting him go was a mistake.
Eric Djemba-Djemba
Wayne Rooney should look away now. Eric Djemba-Djemba earned a dream move to Manchester United for £3.5million in 2003. He left two years later a failure.
He had 10 cars at the same time, juggled money between 30 different bank accounts and after leaving Old Trafford he was declared bankrupt at Birmingham court in 2007.
Now 31, the Cameroon international is now playing for Israel outfit Hapoel Tel Aviv.
