Manchester United's Chris Smalling ruled out of Euro 2012
ENGLAND have been dealt a blow ahead of Euro 2012 after Manchester United defender Chris Smalling has been ruled out of the tournament with a groin injury.
The promising 22-year-old would have been hopeful of claiming a place in Roy Hodgson's squad, as he can cover both the right-back and central defensive positions.
But United boss Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed this morning that the former Fulham player will have no chance of appearing in Poland and Ukraine.
"Chris has suffered a bad injury," he said.
"It is a groin muscle injury and he will miss the European Championships.
"We are assessing what to do at the moment but it is a bad injury."

However, in good news for new England boss Hodgson, United striker Danny Welbeck will be available for international duty this summer despite being ruled out of his club's trip to Sunderland on Sunday with an ankle injury.
England's squad for Euro 2012 will be named on Wednesday.
