Sheffield Wednesday sack Alan Irvine
GARY Megson has emerged favourite to become the new manager of Sheffield Wednesday following the sacking this morning of Alan Irvine.
A 5-3 defeat at Peterborough ended Irvine’s reign at Hillsborough which lasted barely a year.
During the Scot’s time in charge, Wednesday won 24 games, lost 22 and drew 13. But the arrival of Milan Mandaric as the club’s owner soon spelled the end of his tenure.
Megson has been out of the game since leaving Bolton in 2009.
However, he did serve briefly under Mandaric at Leicester, who will now be looking to take him back with the hope of pushing Wednesday towards the Leaguer One play-off places.
They are currently 12th in the table, eight points adrift of the top six, but only five clear of the relegation zone.
However, they are through to the FA Cup fifth round, and will be taking on Birmingham at St Andrews on February 19, by which time the new man should be in place.
