All the latest World Cup news ahead of the 2026 tournament kicking off this Thursday

The 2026 World Cup is just days away from kicking off with excitement building all across the globe!
Co-host nation Mexico open the tournament against South Africa on Thursday, but with several teams not starting their campaigns until mid-June, plenty of pre-World Cup friendlies are still to take place.
England have one more game before the competitive action starts as they take on Costa Rica this Wednesday in Orlando. Over the weekend, nine people were injured in a shooting just four miles from the Swope Soccer Village, as per Reuters, which is where England are due to train once they arrive in Kansas City later this week.
Elsewhere, a Lamine Yamal injury update has emerged with a clear plan in place for his Spain minutes as he is yet to fully recover from a thigh problem.
Stay tuned for the latest World Cup news below!
KEY EVENTS
England's Ngumoha blow if injuries strike
England have thus far avoided any late injury concerns with all 22 players that featured against New Zealand on Saturday coming through their 45-minutes appearances unscathed.
It was a particularly drab 1-0 for Thomas Tuchel's side but Rio Ngumoha was a bright spark. The Liverpool youngster, on the opposite flank to his preferred left side, caused havoc.
He has not been named in England's 26-man squad for the World Cup and cannot even be called up as a late replacement for any injured player due to not being included in the 55-man provisional squad submitted to FIFA.
Their rules state that any replacement had to have been named in the bigger list.

More World Cup injury news...
Following those fireworks, Paraguay went on to beat Nicaragua 4-0 with the only blemish being the injury blow to Julio Enciso.
The Strasbourg star is a key player for his nation and therefore him being unavailable would be a major blow. Thankfully, he has since been captured training individually which suggests the issue is not as bad as first feared.
It is currently unclear whether or not the same can be said for Noussair Mazraoui after he was withdrawn early into Morocco vs Norway on Sunday evening.
Early reports indicate a shoulder injury with it claimed there was a possible dislocation which would put his availability for the tournament into major doubt.

Monday evening's action...
France and The Netherlands are both playing tonight ahead of the World Cup kicking off.
The latter start their campaign this Sunday against Japan but first face Uzbekistan in New York. Ronald Koeman's side will be looking for some momentum after losing to Algeria earlier this month.
France meanwhile, face Northern Ireland in Lille with their tournament still over one week away from starting. They were beaten 2-1 by the Ivory Coast last Thursday.
Colombia, who open their campaign against the Netherlands' final pre-World Cup opponents Uzbekistan, have finished their last friendly in the last few hours.
A brace from Jhon Arias sealed their victory with World Cup cult hero James Rodriguez grabbing an assist.

Sunday's international fixtures rounded up
Alongside Denmark vs Ukraine, there were several other international friendlies that took place on Sunday with four World Cup nations in action.
Croatia, who face England in their opening game of the group-stages, beat Slovenia 2-1 with Luka Modric scoring the winner in added time.
Morocco and Norway, both of whom will be at the tournament, drew 1-1 with Martin Odegaard cancelling out a Brahim Diaz strike.
And finally, Ecuador beat Guatemala 3-0.

Eriksen latest
Though not World Cup-specific news, there were some harrowing scenes during the international friendly between Denmark and Ukraine on Sunday as Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch.
The former Tottenham and Manchester United man suffered a cardiac arrest at Euro 2020 which saw him have a pacemaker fitted.
During the second half yesterday, he collapsed to the floor and was unconscious but he was able to walk to an ambulance.
It has since been confirmed he is in hospital but conscious and doing well, as per Denmark doctor Morten Boesen.
After the game was abandoned, national team head coach Brian Riemer said: "Christian Eriksen waved to his teammates as he left the pitch. A few minutes before he fell ill, he had had a tussle with Ruslan Malinovskyi, and I thought that was why he looked so distressed, but I was wrong.
"From that moment on, neither I nor the players on the pitch could have carried on with the match.
“I’m looking forward to seeing him. I’m going over to see him now as soon as I have the chance. I need to see him and talk to him, I can feel that. He is a man who has meant a great deal to me.
“There are some players you become closer to than others, and he was one of those I became close to because of the experience he came with.
"And since then, we’ve also worked together with the national team, so he is someone I have a close relationship with and know very well. That is why it naturally sits very deeply with me."
The eight sets of brothers at World Cup
A bit of a fun update now with it confirmed that eight sets of brothers will be at the 2026 World Cup with four duos representing different nations. The latter is below:
Guela Doue (Ivory Coast) and Desire Doue (France)Inaki Williams (Ghana) and Nico Williams (Spain)Derrick Luckassen (Ghana) and Brian Brobbey (Netherlands)John Souttar (Scotland) and Harry Souttar (Australia)
Elsewhere, Lucas Hernandez and Theo Hernandez both represent France. For the Netherlands, there is Quinten and Arsenal star Jurrien Timber.

World Cup injury latest
While Yamal is on the mend, other international stars have suffered World Cup injury heartbreak.
Brazil's Wesley is the latest to pick up an issue which will rule him out of the tourmanent while fellow South American nation Argentina have lost Leonardo Balerdi to injury.
They are expected to be replaced by incoming Manchester United and Tottenham signings, Ederson and Marcos Senesi, respectively.
Canada's Moise Bombito has also been deemed not fit enough to feature after the 31 minutes he played in a friendly earlier this month were his first since early October.
Lennart Karl of Germany is another set to miss the World Cup due to a training injury with Assan Ouedraogo to replace him.
Yamal injury update
Lamine Yamal will not be heading to Mexico for Spain's final pre-World Cup friendly in the early hours of Wednesday morning against Peru as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury.
Having suffered the issue playing for Barcelona in late April, clear conditions have been sent for his participation in the tournament.
According to Spanish newspaper Diario AS, a Barca physio has been working closely with Spain on his rehab plan and it is being claimed that he will be allowed to play no more than 15 minutes in their opening match against Cape Verde, and a maximum of 60 in Spain's second match versus Saudi Arabia.
Shooting near England training base
Just four miles away from Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City, Missouri, which is where England will be training, nine people were injured in a shooting on Saturday, as per Reuters.
