Enzo Maresca broke Chelsea contract promise before getting axed

Enzo Maresca broke a promise he made to Chelsea supporters before his bombshell exit was announced on New Year's Day. It was confirmed shortly after midday that Maresca had been relieved of his duties with immediate effect. It followed a run of just one victory in seven Premier League outings, as well as a period of rising tension behind the scenes.

The seeds were sown when Maresca lashed out at Chelsea's hierarchy in an explosive press conference following last month's game against Everton. He said that he had experienced the 'worst 48 hours' of his Blues tenure ahead of the fixture, blaming a lack of support from those in power. It emerged on New Year's Eve that his position was under threat and his exit was made official just 24 hours later.

Maresca is now out of work despite insisting just weeks ago that he would be going nowhere. Asked to confirm if he would still be in charge at Chelsea next season, he replied: "Absolutely yes, I have contract until 2029."

Those comments have left the Italian with egg on his face after his departure was confirmed on Thursday afternoon.

In a statement, Chelsea said: "Chelsea Football Club and head coach Enzo Maresca have parted company. During his time at the club, Enzo led the team to success in the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup.

"Those achievements will remain an important part of the club’s recent history, and we thank him for his contributions to the club.

"With key objectives still to play for across four competitions including qualification for Champions League football, Enzo and the club believe a change gives the team the best chance of getting the season back on track. We wish Enzo well for the future."

Maresca's exit came just days after he skipped his post-match press conference following their draw against Bournemouth, with assistant coach Willy Caballero stepping in.

He explained: "Enzo isn't feeling well. He didn't feel well the last two days but still made training and made the game today.

"I took his position just to clarify that he isn't feeling well enough to do the rest of the stuff that the manager has to do, so I'm here instead."

Liam Rosenior has emerged as the early favourite to take over at Stamford Bridge, with the Blues looking to make a swift appointment.

The former Hull City defender has worked wonders during his time in charge of Strasbourg, who are also owned by BlueCo. Chelsea's top brass are believed to rate Rosenior highly and could give him the opportunity to manage the west Londoners.
