Manchester United will reportedly assess Ruben Amorim's position as the club's head coach at the end of the season, regardless of whether they win the Europa League. The Portuguese tactician has failed to improve domestic results since replacing Erik ten Hag in November, and United are now at risk of a 17th-place Premier League finish.

Amorim has won just six and lost 13 of his 25 league games in charge, while exiting the FA Cup at home to Fulham and crashing out of the Carabao Cup at Tottenham Hotspur. He has the opportunity to salvage his maiden season by beating Spurs in Bilbao on May 21, but that hasn't prevented speculation surrounding his future.

It's claimed that Sir Jim Ratcliffe and chief executive Omar Berrada will sit down with other officials and review Amorim's position after the curtain comes down on the campaign. United's new INEOS regime proved they aren't afraid to cut their losses with the axing of former sporting director Dan Ashworth just five months into the job.

Express Sport looks at four candidates if the Red Devils' hierarchy agrees to do the unthinkable and dismiss Amorim after less than a year.

Xavi

Xavi is one of the hottest free agents in football management, and he has made no secret of his interest in arriving in the Premier League.

The former Barcelona coach has been linked with United previously. The Independent claimed he was approached to become the club's interim boss for the remainder of the season before Amorim arrived.

Xavi was said to have declined that opportunity, but he could be interested in discussing the permanent job if it's available earlier than expected.

Max Allegri

Max Allegri is currently the bookmakers' favourite to replace Amorim should the 40-year-old depart Old Trafford this summer.

The Italian, who boasts a prolific record of lifting major trophies in his homeland with AC Milan and Juventus, is awaiting his next job after leaving his second stint with the latter at the end of last season.

His stock took a hit during his second spell with the Old Lady, though, and despite his credentials, it would feel like a risky appointment.

Thomas Frank

Not to speak down on a brilliant club like Brentford, Thomas Frank will earn a blockbuster job in football eventually.

The Bees' challenge for European football this season has once again proven his credentials - tactically and in terms of his talent IQ for impressive recruitment.

The latter has been United's biggest problem in the last decade, and he is experienced enough in the Premier League that he wouldn't be intimidated by stepping into the Old Trafford dugout.

Mauricio Pochettino

It's a name that will seemingly be linked with United until he either takes the job or retires. Mauricio Pochettino will always be in the frame.

However, if the M16 giants want Pochettino this summer, they'd have to convince him to walk away from the USMNT ahead of their home World Cup in 2026.

That attractive incentive, and likely the driving force behind his decision to surprisingly take the United States job, would make him an outside candidate.
