A poll, of 1,000 football lovers, revealed a quarter would be open to dropping everything to support their beloved team in Germany’s capital if England made it to the Euros final. After so many years of hurt, 44% wouldn’t want to miss what could be a historical moment for the Three Lions.

So much so that two-thirds (64%) of England fans would pull a sickie to watch their team play at any stage of the Euros. While 23% would miss their own birthday celebrations, a fifth (21%) would skip a hen or stag do, and 19% would bail on a christening if they made it to the final.

As flight prices continue to rise, 30% would consider flying to another country and hiring a car to drive to Germany to save on costs.

The research was commissioned by Skyscanner, which ran additional insight to reveal the average cost of a direct flight from the UK to Düsseldorf, for England’s opening game could set fans back £454.

But by jetting from London to neighbouring country Luxembourg - and hiring a motor to drive to Germany - fans could save up to £278.

For England’s final group match in Cologne against Slovenia, the average cost of flying direct would be £362, compared to catching a flight from Manchester to Amsterdam, and hiring a car for just £168 - that’s over two-and-a-half times cheaper than a direct flight.

Laura Lindsay, at Skyscanner, said: “We know how much football fans are rallying behind England and Scotland this Euros and they will pull out all the stops and explore all avenues to get there.”

The study also found 23% of England fans would be willing to drive all the way to Germany to cheer on England as a spectator outside of the stadium if the team do well.

But could save a staggering £453 if they were to do so for the opening game, travelling from Manchester to Amsterdam and completing their journey by car over flying direct.

It also found 41% would even consider hiring a van or people carrier to cart friends overseas to get to the Euros and cut down the costs.

While spending nine hours in the car with your mates could contribute to the pre-match build-up, if they had their choice their top driving companions would be David Beckham, Jurgen Klopp, Ian Wright and Gino D’Campo.

And the footie fandom doesn’t stop with our national team as 22% would still want to go to the Euros final regardless of whether England is playing, the research, conducted via OnePoll found.

While a third (31%) of England fans would travel to Germany to soak up the atmosphere of the Euros even without a ticket to a game, as 35% agreed the atmosphere in Germany will be much better than that of their local area.

Skyscanner has teamed up with TikTok star and travel content creator Rob Adcock, who added: “With the Euros kicking off, eager fans are willing to go all lengths to get to Germany to cheer on the boys. But, as flight prices to get to the matches surge, fans risk being priced out of making the trip this summer.”
