Liverpool have sent a brief birthday message to Alan Hansen on his 69th birthday. It comes after news broke that the Reds legend is seriously ill in hospital.

The Reds confirmed in a statement over the weekend that Hansen, who featured 630 times for the English giants during a hugely illustrious period for the club, had been hospitalised ahead of his 69th birthday.

And now Liverpool have put out a very short message on social media sending their thoughts to the former centre-back and his family.

Alongside a picture of the ex-Scotland international lifting the old First Division trophy aloft during his playing days for the club, Liverpool wrote: "We’re all thinking of Alan and his family on his 69th birthday", accompanied by a love heart emoji.

Hansen had moved to Liverpool from Partick Thistle back in 1977, before spending 14 years on Merseyside. During this period, the former defender won eight league titles, three European Cups, two FA Cups and three League Cups.

After establishing himself as one of Liverpool's best players, he then spent four years as captain as he etched his name in the club's history books thanks to their dominance within England.

Hansen also won 26 caps for Scotland between the years of 1979 and 1987.

After his playing career came to an end, Hansen moved into punditry, becoming synonymous with Match of the Day alongside Gary Lineker and co.

Liverpool had released an emotional statement on Sunday that their former centre-back had been hospitalised.

They wrote: "The thoughts and support of everyone at Liverpool FC are with our legendary former captain Alan Hansen, who is currently seriously ill in hospital.

"A defender of the utmost elegance, Hansen's outstanding raft of honours across a 14-year spell with the Reds - he joined from Partick Thistle in 1977 - included eight league titles, three European Cups, two FA Cups and three League Cups.

"The club is currently in contact with Alan's family to provide our support at this difficult time. Our thoughts, wishes and hopes are with Alan and all of the Hansen family.

"We will provide any further updates as we receive them in due course. We request that the Hansen family's privacy is respected at this time."
