Arsenal icon names bold England XI vs Serbia with intriguing tactical switch

Gareth Southgate has been told to be bold with his England line-ups for the Euro 2024 Group C matches.

Arsenal icon Jack Wilshere says he would play Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kyle Walker together in defence for England in Sunday’s Euro 2024 clash with Serbia. Debate has raged in the build-up to the tournament over whether Liverpool star Alexander-Arnold could start in midfield, with Walker at right-back.

But Wilshere wants Gareth Southgate to halt plans to use Alexander-Arnold in the middle and instead select them both in a back four, suggesting a bold and very attacking line-up. The former midfielder believes Walker can play at centre-back.

That would allow Alexander-Arnold to play in a more natural right-back position, drifting into central areas like he did late in Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool reign. Southgate is instead likely to play Walker at right-back, with Marc Guehi alongside John Stones at centre-back if the Manchester City defender recovers in time from illness.

“If you play Trent at right-back and he drifts in midfield, he can switch the play at speed,” Wilshere told the Sun. “Walker’s pace will get you out of trouble.”

Wilshere has also named an attacking midfield. He wants Southgate to deploy Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden in central midfield, ahead of Declan Rice as a sole defensive midfielder.

The 32-year-old continued: “Naturally Bellingham will play closer to Kane, making those runs and hopefully scoring those goals that he has for Real. Maybe Foden will play a bit lower with the ball and can feed him.”

Southgate is more likely to use a 4-2-3-1 shape, as he did throughout England’s qualifying campaign. Rice could start alongside Alexander-Arnold in midfield, with Bellingham slightly ahead in a No. 10 position.

If Foden starts the tournament, he could occupy one of the wide roles.

But Wilshere wants England to make the most of their excellent technical players. He pointed out that his own Three Lions generation had been criticised for lacking the elite profile of players that Spain had at the time.

Trent Alexander-Arnold

Justifying his attacking team, Wilshere concluded: “In the group stage against teams we should beat, we can afford to be more expansive. Let’s attack.

“It wasn’t that long ago we were saying we didn’t have the Spanish-type of players who can dominate the ball, now we have. So let’s try to utilise that, dominate the ball and go for goals.”

England’s Euro 2024 campaign gets underway against Serbia on Sunday. Southgate’s side then face Denmark on June 20 and will hope to qualify from Group C when they meet Slovenia on June 25.
