Ex-England manager Sam Allardyce has delivered a stark message to Wayne Rooney about the importance of his backroom team at Plymouth Argyle. The former Manchester United and England striker's appointment has divided Pilgrims' fans.

After less-than-impressive stints at DC United and Birmingham City, which saw the latter get relegated to League One, Rooney faces a tough challenge at Plymouth. With Rooney's managerial record not inspiring confidence, he will need to prove himself quickly to dispel any scepticism.

Allardyce, whose own managerial career spans clubs like Bolton, Newcastle, and West Ham, and includes a short-lived tenure with England, emphasised the critical role of Rooney's support staff in ensuring his success.

On the 'No Tippy Tappy Football' podcast, Allardyce highlighted the importance of a solid and experienced backroom team. He said: "If I was speaking to him now [I'd tell him] the biggest selection is his background staff of his managerial career.

"He's had many different backroom staff members wherever he's been, starting from Derby, to America, to Birmingham, to Plymouth now. He's got all that experience in his backroom staff, who's going to support him and be better than he is at other things.

"You can't be great at everything, you've got to realise your strengths and then find someone who is better at that particular thing than you are.

"You employ them, then you make sure they deliver and deliver better than you can, because it is one of your weaknesses, not one of your strengths, so you stick to your strengths. You promote your weaknesses by finding somebody better than you at doing that particular job, whatever it might be."

Rooney has now assembled his team for the upcoming season, with Kevin Nancekivell and Simon Ireland joining as first-team coaches. Daryl Flahavan will also come on board as the goalkeeping coach.

Plymouth narrowly escaped relegation back to League One, securing a 1-0 victory over Hull City on the final day to stay above the dreaded drop zone. Meanwhile, Rooney took over Birmingham from John Eustace when they were sixth in the Championship, only to be sacked with the club languishing in 20th place.

In an ironic twist, Plymouth ended the season higher than Rooney's former side, condemning them to League One for the first time in nearly three decades. When the appointment was announced, Rooney said: “Taking this role at Plymouth Argyle feels like the perfect next step in my career – and I would like to thank the Chairman and Board for the faith they have shown in me.

“This is an opportunity to be part of an exciting project. I look forward to helping to build a squad of players to play expansive football – and to entertain the Green Army. I have experienced first-hand how talented the existing group of players is here – and also the incredible atmosphere at Home Park.

"The club is on an exciting long-term journey, with a progressive plan in place. I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of it. I can’t wait for the Championship season to start in August.”
