England ditched Wembley to take international football to the north east on Monday night as they hosted Bosnia at Newcastle’s St James’ Park. And a Three Lions fan took the opportunity to wipe his bare bottom on a St George’s flag that had the word Sunderland written on it while the match was taking place.

England took to the St James’ Park pitch for the first time since a 2-0 victory over Azerbaijan in March 2005.

And Gareth Southgate’s side were made to work hard for a 3-0 win in their latest encounter, with all three goals coming in the second period.

Entertainment was hard to come by during some spells of the match as Bosnia attempted to make life difficult for the home team.

But one incident that attracted the attention of some people occurred while Kieran Trippier was preparing to take a throw-in.

An England fan in the front row pulled down his trousers while pointing his rear end towards the pitch and proceeded to scrape a flag between his buttocks. The man, who may be a supporter of Sunderland’s arch-rivals Newcastle, then laughed with his friends before returning to his seat.

England took an hour to break the deadlock against Bosnia as Cole Palmer fired the ball into the back of the net from the penalty spot.

Trent Alexander-Arnold then volleyed the ball into the far corner for England’s second goal of the evening with five minutes remaining.

And substitute Harry Kane bundled in a third from close range after coming off the bench to make his first appearance since the Champions League semi-finals at the start of May.

After the match, England boss Southgate told BBC Radio 5 Live: “I thought the intensity of the game was good. We had players that needed minutes and we needed a competitive game. The opposition was dogged so we had to be patient and keep probing - we felt our quality would tell.

“There was some good individual performances and hopefully we have come through with no issues. Winning and clean sheets are good habits to have.”

And goalscorer Alexander-Arnold added: “I think it was a positive night and it was a good one. A foundation laid and one to build on. After not playing for two weeks it was always bound to be a slow start.

“We built into it as a team and we found our feet in the second half. We made adjustments and penetrated through the lines - we can take a lot of positives. I love playing football and it was one I have been excited for. I was itching to get out there, I love playing for my country.”
