Jamie Carragher tells Sky Sports to 'sack' him and Gary Neville over Man Utd agreement
Sky Sports pundits Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher were left red-faced by Manchester United.
Ten Hag admits Man Utd 'overperformed' last season
Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher joked that Sky Sports should sack himself and Gary Neville after revisiting their pre-season predictions and realising that they both tipped Manchester United to finish third in the Premier League this season. The Red Devils have underperformed Neville and Carragher’s expectations under Erik ten Hag and are currently sitting in seventh place.
On the pundits' Monday Night Football show where Liverpool defeated Newcastle 4-2, Neville and Carragher took another look at their pre-season calls which included Neville backing Arsenal to win the title, while Carragher felt that it would be a fourth title in a row for Manchester City.
But off the back of United’s third-place finish last season, the pair both thought that they would be able to repeat that feat following the arrivals of Rasmus Hojlund, Andre Onana and Mason Mount.
When the graphic flashed up of their predictions and host David Jones pointed out that they both had United in third place, Carragher joked: “We should both be relieved of our duties for that.”

After being reminded of their United claim that has some way to go before being proven right, Carragher and Neville also gave their teams of the season at the mid-way point of the campaign. They agreed on eight out of 11 selections, with both pundits having the same back four of Trent Alexander-Arnold, William Saliba, Virgil van Dijk and Destiny Udogie.
They opted for three of the same forwards too in Mohamed Salah, Son Heung-min and Jarrod Bowen, but there were plenty of disagreements in midfield and between the posts. They both picked Arsenal’s Declan Rice but Neville named what Carragher felt was the “narrowest team ever” with Rodri alongside him and Erling Haaland up front.

Neville went with Alisson in goal while Carragher opted for Tottenham’s new goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario and had Bernardo Silva and Cole Palmer alongside Rice in midfield. Carragher said that he “can’t believe” Neville overlooked the Chelsea star and he thinks Palmer “has been one of the players of the season”.
Neville disagreed, however, and insisted that Rodri needed to be included as City "can't win a game without him". He continued: "Rodri is the best midfield player in the world in his position. They've won two trophies already this season. I can't believe you wouldn't pick him."
But despite predicting United to finish third once again under Ten Hag, no Red Devils were named in either team of the season and they are nine points behind rivals City in that position.
United have a big margin to overcome in order to prove Carragher and Neville right, but the Liverpool icon especially holds little faith that they will do so and joked that the pair deserved to be sacked for such a prediction.
