Jorg Schmadtke looks set to join Liverpool as their new transfer chief ahead of a potentially busy summer window.

Jorg Schmadtke is reportedly in advanced talks with Liverpool over becoming their new sporting director, where he will work alongside Jurgen Klopp as the Reds look to overhaul their midfield. Despite a recent formation change that has proved successful with six wins in a row after their 1-0 victory over Brentford on Saturday, those at the club will be aware that further investment is needed.
Schmadtke was said to have received a glowing recommendation from Klopp during the hiring process, which has since reached the stage of formalities as he is expected to sign a three-year contract at Anfield. Schmadtke has held similar positions at Hannover, Cologne and most recently Wolfsburg, until he left them in January.
He will work alongside current Liverpool figures Dave Fallows and Barry Hunter as Julian Ward is on his way out of the club, while the focus will be on improving the midfield area of the squad. James Milner, Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Arthur Melo are all set to leave Liverpool at the end of the season, while the Reds’ midfield woes have been apparent all campaign.
A recent switch from Klopp has allowed Trent Alexander-Arnold to invert and provide greater stability and influence from the middle of the pitch, but supporters will be expecting investment in that area - despite pulling out of the race to sign Jude Bellingham they are said to have three prime candidates this summer.

The Daily Mail have claimed that those transfer targets are Chelsea’s Mason Mount, Alexis Mac Allister of Brighton and Matheus Nunes - who has spent a season at Wolves. In addition to those three, the club are also tracking Nice midfielder Khephren Thuram.
Liverpool’s interest in Mount has been well-documented, as the England man has just one more year on his contract at Stamford Bridge beyond this season and could headline Chelsea’s summer clear-out. He has been unable to agree terms on a new deal following Todd Boehly’s huge spending spree since taking over, with Liverpool among the Premier League teams lurking in the hope of landing Mount this summer.

Mac Allister has starred for Brighton in their stunning season, prompting interest from a host of top clubs across Europe as the Argentine could be set to depart the Seagulls.
There is a reported clause in the 24-year-old’s contract that could help facilitate a sale, though Brighton have proved that they will not be bullied in the market and will demand a top fee for their star man.
Liverpool’s interest in Nunes predates his move to Wolves, as it was previously claimed by The Telegraph that a commitment was in place to take him to Anfield for £44m at the end of the season, just £6m more than Wolves paid to land the Portuguese international last summer, as Schmadtke plans to get to work and improve the Reds’ midfield options.
